Who Is the Current Liverpool Owner? Profile, Background, History & Future Plans Explained

Be it the fans, the League trophies, or the European glory, when a club wins it all with the littlest of means, it is understandable for the rest to be envious. That seems to be the story of the Merseyside Reds. Be it the famous Istanbul night or the ‘Corner taken quickly’ at Anfield on the European night, the Club has written glorious comebacks. While these performances have left the rest of the World in Awe, it is the English pundits who seem to have a ‘perception’ of the Reds. Be it the players or even the owners, there seems to be no escape from the harsh critics. Recently, we have seen more jabs at the Liverpool football club owner FSG.

That being said, even if the fans have a love-hate relationship with the current Liverpool owner, the Reds got back to their winning ways after their arrival. Over the years, the club has seen many ownership changes, and along with that, there have been a lot of managerial changes as well. Liverpool’s path from Shankly to Klopp has seen many owners and managers, each bringing new ideas, with Fenway Sports Group, who are the owners of Liverpool, leading the club back to winning ways.

In this article, we will take a brief tour of the different owners of the club and how the Fenway Sports Group, led by John Henry, came into power.

A Brief History of Liverpool Football Club

Since the club was founded in 1892, Anfield has undergone a lot. The club went through a massive drought of 30 years for the Premier League title for years, but after Jurgen Klopp’s arrival, everything changed. Jürgen Klopp gave them hope, and they won the Premier League in 2019-20. After five years of consistent performance, Anfield again got the chance to see the Premier League trophy, this time under the guidance of Arne Slot.

We created a detailed table for the club’s silverware cabinet, which contains a lot of silverware.

History of Liverpool Owners

Perhaps the ownership of Liverpool Football Club has had such strong principles over the years that the club has never had 115 charges. Not to mention, the Anfield Road had gone into construction too. But it was for the expansion rather than because of the stands of the stadium becoming a water park.

The Club takes pride in both the managerial and ownership changes it has had since its inception. From the Paisley era to now, Arne Slot, and from Houlding to FSG, the Merseyside Reds have a rich history of both managers and owners.

The Reds have gone through a transitional era after the departure of the Club’s favorite legend, Steven Gerrard. However, unlike other clubs that have taken decades to return to their winning ways and compete for the top position, Liverpool only took a few years. Perhaps a managerial mastery, the owner’s vision, or a combination of the two?

The table below provides details on who owns Liverpool right now and who were all the owners of Liverpool till now (2025).

The arrival of FSG

The arrival of FSG, the current Liverpool football club owner, led by John Henry and his wife Linda Pizzuti Henry, had brought many promises. And with the arrival of a certain German tactician from Dortmund, those promises were delivered. Henry is the principal owner of FSG. Mike Gordon and Tom Werner are the respective presidents and chairmen of the group. Be it the matches or charity events, you will see Linda Pizzuti Henry involved in all the events.

The company, which is based in Boston, owns other franchises too, such as the Boston Red Sox and Pittsburgh Penguins. The Fenway Sports Group is part-owned by investment firms such as RedBird Capital Partners and Arctos Sports Partners. The Club has recently welcomed a minority investment from Dynasty Equity. Back in 2021, LeBron James also came in with the club with a minority investment. You will see many LeBron James-inspired kits launched by the Liverpool Football Club.

What is the current ownership situation of Liverpool?

It was about fourteen years ago that John W. Henry first graced the high court as the new owner of Liverpool. The transformation has been just as profound as the Reds. From securing the sporting giant at a mere $391 million from the Hicks and Gillett’s tenure, the stewardship of FSG (current Liverpool football club owner) has seen the value rocket of Liverpool to an eye-watering $5.6 billion. Even amidst the triumph, the group has navigated the waters of the unknown for the past couple of years by dealing with transitions both within the corridors of the Kop and across the pond.

The statements a year ago had piqued interest from Saudi Arabia, India, Germany, Qatar, among others, to be a potential shareholder of the team. However, the buzz quickly toned down after FSG got back control of the Shankly Gates. As of right now, the Liverpool owners, FSG, have had dealings with PIF in the current times. John W. Henry was said to have been involved in talks between the PGA Tour and PIF last month about a probable $1 billion investment from the Saudi group.

FSG also sold a minority stake in Liverpool to global sports investment firm Dynasty Equity last year, following rumors that they could look to sell the club. It might be a big surprise to see the Reds’ owners try to sell up now, given that they are looking to expand the soccer portfolio after bringing in Julian Ward and Michael Edwards earlier this year.

Future Plans of Liverpool Owners

Liverpool’s future looks bright under FSG, the current Liverpool owners. The current owners of Liverpool, the Fenway Sports Group, are investing deeply in young talents like Jeremy Frimpong & Florian Wirtz, keeping in mind the departures of prominent players soon. After City’s dip in form and Arsenal’s habit of bottling the league every season, the club has a chance to increase the number of Premier League titles in its trophy cabinet and become the most successful in the history of the English Premier League. FSG is focused on long-term success, with no plans to sell the club soon. They are also improving infrastructure, like the Anfield Road Stand, to enhance the fan experience. Fans of Liverpool are satisfied with the owners, and there are hardly any complaints against the FSG. The club is still focused on self-sustainability rather than being dependent on heavy external investments.

FSG or Fenway Sports Group, the Liverpool owners, is planning to pursue a multi-club ownership model to expand its global football presence. It will help the group in sustaining economies of scale and will create a talent pipeline with the help of clubs playing in a lower division. As of May 2025, the club is looking to acquire Bordeaux to start with their multi-club ownership model.
