The Women’s National Basketball Association (WNBA) is a women’s professional basketball league headquartered in the United States of America. It's considered as the premier league for professional basketball for women. The league comprises 13 teams (15 in 2026). The WNBA is based in Midtown Manhattan.
The National Basketball Association or NBA is the male counterpart of the WNBA. The commissioner of the National Basketball Association in 1996 was David Stern, Stern founded the WNBA in 1996. Then the WNBA was not only considered as a new opportunity for female athletes but also as a career opportunity for women in general considering the scarcity of professional leagues in women’s sports at the time.
Early Years of the WNBA- The creation of the league was officially approved by the NBA Board of Governors on April 24, 1996, and was announced at a press conference with WNBA legend Lisa Leslie in attendance. The league commenced with eight teams: The Charlotte Sting, Cleveland Rockers, Detroit Shock, Houston Comets, Los Angeles Sparks, New York Liberty, Phoenix Mercury, and Sacramento Monarchs.
While the distinction of the first major women’s professional basketball league in the United States is held by the no longer in use “WBL,” The WNBA is the first league to be financially backed by the NBA. The initial years of the WNBA were heavily followed by the fans both in terms of a TV audience and Media attention, thanks to it being promoted and marketed by the men’s league. Players like Sheryl Swoopes, Lisa Leslie and Cynthia Cooper played an essential role in this process of promoting the league to the new and already established fans. During the early 2000s, the WNBA expanded in terms of teams and global reach. Chicago Sky (2006) and the Atlanta Dream (2008) joined the league, expanding the demographic of the young league. Sheryl Swoopes became the first player to have a shoe named after her in collaboration with Nike. The 2010 era is marked by the greatness of The Minnesota Lynx establishing themselves as a powerhouse in the league after winning several titles in 2011,2013, and 2015.
The Modern Era of the WNBA has had both ups and downs with the 2020 season attracting an unprecedented level of visibility and social activism, especially during the Black Lives Matter movement, where the league used their reforms and resources to advocate for police reform, racial justice, and equality of gender. This was observed again on an even higher scale in the 2020 WNBA Bubble season held in Bradenton, Florida, during the COVID-19 pandemic and marks another important moment in the league’s history as despite the challenges of the pandemic they were reliseient and produced not only highly competitive matches but also maintained their push for social justice activism with players reading messages like “Black lives Matter “ and “Say Her Name.”
